Gion Nanba is located in the heart of the Geisha town of Gion, just a stone’s throw from Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto. Yet, it’s hard to find if you don’t know exactly where it is. It is meant to be hidden – a Gion’s tradition to treasure private time and space, escaping from the prominent amusement world. Slipping off the busy Shijo street into a narrow alley – like Alice in Wonderland – you will find a small light that only says its name. It didn’t take long, however, for a Michelin critic to find this new, secretive restaurant and gave it a star. It offers an exquisite traditional Kaiseki multi-course dinner and lunch in a very private atmosphere in a unique Kyoto-Gion style.
